Artist Statement

I am Victoria Sgarbi,a Brazilian artist based in Miami, Florida, and currently a sophomore studying Graphic Design at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in Providence, Rhode Island.

My work bridges my love for traditional painting and drawing with my passion for design. Since a young age, I’ve been absorbed in creating art, and as I grew older, I discovered a deep appreciation for design. Now, as I pursue a career in graphic design, I find joy in integrating design principles into my fine art practice.

My  oil portraits explore abstract visual language by incorporating intentional shapes and colors to reflect my subjects’ personalities through a design lens. By experimenting with varying opacities, limited color palettes, and dynamic shapes, I create unique interpretations of family, friends, and even strangers. Recently, I’ve been focusing on color exploration while I continue to experiment with diverse mediums and processes, including ink, graphite, and found materials. While I focus on building my graphic design portfolio, I continue to nurture my love for painting and strive to find harmony between fine art and design.

As I explore graphic design, I bring my love for vibrant colors and visual effects to my digital work. I’m especially interested in how visual elements like typography, color, and form communicate ideas and engage specific audiences. I adore bright colors and decorative typefaces that have a rich personality. I am currently enjoying exploring all types of materials, techniques, and interests of mine throughout my graphic design  courses as I pursue a large array of projects.

During my time at RISD, I have developed a thoughtful and research-driven approach to my projects. I am drawn to visual design, branding, and communicative design. I am extremely interested in branding, identity, and marketing in relation to visual design, and how design can completely reshape a business, its consumers, and its message.

I am currently working as a Student Coordinator and social media designer for RISD’s First Generation Organization, Project Thrive. I am also part of the design team for Somos, Brown University’s latinx literary design magazine. I look forward to continuing growing my design practice with these roles alongside my classes at RISD.
